Storing, Accessing and Sharing Data: Addressing the Challenges and Solutions

Date: 9th September 2010, Time: 10:00 am
Location: Royal Society of Edinburgh, 22-26 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2PQ
Booking Status:  Plenty spaces left.

The event will showcase how technology can underpin the requirements for biomedical and life science research data management and sharing in Universities and other research organisations. Addressed will be the feasibility of achieving data storage, access, and sharing from a technological perspective.

The areas that will be addressed/considered are:

o   Cost effectively storing Data
o   Data Mobility/ Accessibility/ Transfer of data
o   Meta Data – best ways to store the data and also how to make sure the right people can access the material and the wrong people can’t!
o   Effectively managing different data types e.g from millions of small files to lots of large image files
o   Indexing the data and being able to recover the right information
o   Data sustainability and Durability (is it appropriate to move data to tape and if so when and how do you futureproof this?)
o   Tiering of Data to help reduce cost (and the automation of this)
o   Scalability
o   Building a resilient infrastructure

Speakers:

Phil Butcher, Head of IT, Sanger Institute
Jeremy Olsen, Head of IT, London Research Institute, Cancer Research UK
Jim Austin, CEO, Cybula
Robert Anderson, Director, Technology & Business Development EMEA, Isilon Systems

Mark Smith, Technical Director, S3

This event is organised in partnership with Solid State Solutions (S3).
S3, formed in 1988, is a specialist in identifying and providing bespoke data storage solutions across rapidly changing technological landscapes. S3 has been key to the deployment of storage solutions for the BBSRC, European Molecular Biology Laboratory, and Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.

S3 is able to offer a truly consultative and storage-centric approach to identify and address the specific customer needs. Through a journey of understanding we are able to identify key operational requirements and implement ‘best of breed’ storage solutions from a trusted portfolio of established vendors. Our success and longevity can be attributed to our attention to detail and our pledge to focus on our client’s core needs.

Whether you are a single researcher looking for a cost effective storage solution for your current project or a large organisation looking for a 2PB namespace we have the knowledge and experience to help guide you to the correct solution.
